The Trip

We have planned a trip to visit the Kettle Boys at Fortune Farms (click here for info), located on the Wolfe Grove Road near Almonte, to see how Maple Syrup has been made over the ages. Take the scenic route and stop on the way at Temple’s Sugar Camp Restaurant (click here for info) at Ferguson’s Falls for brunch. Proceed on to Fortune Farms to visit their modern operation and sample some of the best maple syrup products in the area. Take a walk back in time to see the Shanty Men demonstrate how maple syrup was made in the last century. Then walk a little further back to see the Kettle Boys demonstrate how syrup was made in the late 1800’s. Here you will be able to experience the fun that went along with old time syrup making and taste what has been described as “the best maple syrup in the country that is not for sale”. 

The Suggested Itinerary

10:00am       Leave Tim Horton’s on Dufferin Street (#7) by car ~ you may want to travel with others.

10:30am       Arrive at Temple’s and proceed to back loft to have brunch together. Tell them you are from Probus. If you select the group brunch (multiples of 4 or 6 people), the cost will be about $10 a person. This will be the only expense for the day, unless you choose to buy some maple syrup products. After brunch, go next door to see how Temple’s make maple syrup. Tell Andrew “Colin sent you”.

11:30ish        Leave for Fortune Farms

Noon-ish       Arrive at Fortune Farms and enter main building near parking lot. Tell the Fortunes “Colin sent you.” Their maple syrup and syrup products are excellent if you are in the mood to buy. Ask to see their modern evaporator. Then walk up the trail following the Kettle Boy's signs. Stop off en route to see how the Shanty Men make their syrup. Proceed further along to see the Kettle Boys and be prepared to have some fun. (Note: this is not a long walk, but you will need good boots.)

2:00ish          (or whenever the mood strikes) leave for home

2:45ish          Arrive back in Perth (hopefully happier and definitely sweeter).

To Take Part

• Depart Tim Horton's on Dufferin Street
• Go North on #511 to Balderson (~7km)
• Turn right at crossroads in Balderson on Concession 8 A
• Veer left on Prestonvale Road (~2km)
• Follow Prestonvale to stop sign at Ferguson's Falls Road (~7.5km)
• Go straight (north) on Ferguson's Falls Road and watch for Temple's on left (<1km)
• Park in parking lot on left



• After lunch turn left (north) on Ferguson's Falls Road
• Follow Ferguson's Falls Road to Upper Perth Road (~2.9km)
• Make slight left and follow Upper Perth Road (~7.8km)
• Turn right to stay on Upper Perth Road (~2.5km)
• Slight left at Ramsey Concession 1 (~0.4km)
• Turn left at Wolf Grove Rd. Fortune Farms will be on the right at 2442 Wolf Grove Road(~1km)
• Park in parking lot on right if possible, or along Wolf Grove Road (watch for cars!)



• On return to Perth, retrace route or go west on Wolf Grove Road to #511 and south to Perth
